ABA Statement: NY Governor’s Sweeping Tax Hikes on New Yorkers Add Strain to Checkbooks and Put Paychecks at Risk All During a Time of Recession

New York "Obesity" Tax Being Opposed and Mocked

As a news story for the Westchester County news put it, New Yorkers are "fizzling" on the state's proposed tax on soft drinks. The writer was reporting on a Quinnipiac University Polling Institute survey that showed 67 percent of New York voters opposed the soft drink tax. And New Yorkers clearly reject the ridiculous attempts to associate soft drinks with a renowned killer like tobacco - as 73 percent of voters supported increasing the cigarette tax.  The Journal News quotes Quinnipiac Polling Institute Director Maurice Carroll as saying:  "Voters aren't swallowing the proposal to tax nondiet soft drinks, the so called ‘fat tax.'"

But New Yorkers are now starting to mock the soda tax as well.  New York State Health Commissioner Richard Daines is being mocked for a You Tube video he filmed attempting to justify the tax.  A New York Post editorial Sunday called it "nutty, pedantic online shtick." Other New Yorkers have taken it upon themselves to respond to Daines' foray into You Tube with video posts of their own. Check out this video response on You Tube. It's worth a watch.

And as the news clip below shows, the breadth of New York taxes during a recession has even the national media raising their eye-brows and chuckling in astonishment.
